Join us at 11am on Tuesday 7 June either in person at Te Atamira or online for a conversation with highly acclaimed American dancer and choreographer Jamar Roberts.
Jamar Roberts’ film Cooped is part of Te Atamira’s current film programme Constraint and Freedom, screening on Fridays-Sundays 10am-4pm until 19 June. Cooped is a collaboration with musicians David Watson (bagpipes) and Tony Buck(drums). The film was commissioned by Works & Process, an annual performing arts series at the Guggenheim in New York City, which instigated Virtual Commissions in 2020 to support the creation of new collaborative works by 280 artists through successive lockdowns during the pandemic.
The work was inspired by the release of statistics showing the disproportionate amount of black and brown bodies being affected by the Covid-19 crisis and the way this reflects the historical trauma of black bodies being relegated to live within confined spaces.
