Arrowtown-based weaver Jasmine Clark will be working in our project space, MANAAKI NUI, Mondays – Fridays between 23 June and 10 July, 11am – 3pm.
This is the first of two ‘open studios’ at Te Atamira in June and July featuring local practitioners. The project is designed to give visitors the chance to gain an insight into the artists’ creative practices and works-in-progress.
Jasmine Clark grew up in Karekare on Auckland’s west coast and was introduced to the world of weaving by her grandmother and mother, who were both rug weavers. She studied sculpture and object design at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland and visual arts at Nelson Polytechnic. Over the past twenty years, she has developed various innovative weaving and sculptural techniques inspired by natural forms and processes. Her work utilises a range of natural and recycled materials, including flax, rattan, driftwood, willow, copper wire, pumice and sea bull kelp.
She was recently commissioned to produce large-scale work for the new Southern Cross Central Lakes Hospital and the Sudima Queenstown Five Mile hotel in Frankton. Her current work focuses on a major new commission for the Hyatt Hotel planned for a nearby location in Remarkables Park.
In conversation with the artist: Tuesday 28 June, 10.30am & Friday 8 July, 5.30pm.
