Saturday Arts Social is a multi-arts programme and morning tea designed for our 60+ community. We gather every Saturday morning for a broad programme of events including concerts, art workshops, dance/movement classes and artist talks. Next event: Saturday 5 April, 10:30am - 12:30pm

Upcoming Programmes:

5 April - Alta (2016-2024) Artist Talk with Marc Blake

Join us for an artist talk with Marc Blake, whose exhibition Alta (2016–2024) is now showing in our gallery, Whakaari. Marc will discuss his eight-year photographic project, and how a solitary basketball hoop in Kawarau Falls Park became a lens for exploring memory, place, and transformation.

About Marc Blake: Marc Blake’s practice has increasingly unified around an open response to his environment and experiences, primarily painting-driven, yet moving beyond any singular process, or technique.  Since the early 2000s, Blake’s parallel exploration of painting, photography, and digital imagery has evolved, with each of these mediums now interwoven and re-examined in his current work.  Rather than focusing on "how" or "why" a piece is created, Blake often reflects on the "when"—the significance of creating and presenting a particular work at this moment in time.

12 April - Batik Painting with Ika Willett

Discover the traditional Indonesian art of batik, a wax-resist technique used to create intricate patterns on fabric. In this session, you’ll learn the fundamentals by applying wax and painting to bring your own unique design to life.

Batik is a traditional art form with roots in Indonesia, particularly in Java, where it's part of an ancient tradition. Some patterns hold symbolic significance and are used only in certain occasions, while others were created to satisfy fashion trends.

About Ika Willett: Ika came to New Zealand to pursue her Master's degree in Graphic Design and Animation. Before that, she spent several years working in the television industry in both Indonesia and New Zealand. In 2002, she moved to Arrowtown with her now-husband. Since then, she has returned to hands-on art forms, including Māori weaving and pottery. Today, she primarily works on commissioned portrait paintings.

19 April - Start Your First Novel with Lizzy Dent

Lizzy Dent will host a fun, practical session designed to help you kick off your first novel with confidence. In this workshop, we will look at what makes a compelling hook, how to craft a strong logline, plus simple outline steps to help get your story going. With short exercises, you’ll leave with the tools - and the inspiration - to get cracking on your first novel. Perfect for beginners or anyone stuck on page one!

About Lizzy Dent: Lizzy Dent is the author of eight books, including the bestselling comedy The Summer Job, which was translated into nine languages and optioned for TV by Universal Content Production. She specializes in commercial fiction that blends heartfelt emotions, engaging plots, and plenty of humour. She enjoys writing relatable characters in real-life dilemmas (or absolute catastrophes), and her books explore themes of love, identity, and personal growth. But she's now writing a thriller and probably needs this workshop more than you do!
